Distance and Difficulty

Typically, upper mustang trek covers a distance of 95-125 kilometers, depend on the specific route taken and side trips. The trek starts from Jomsom or Kagbeni, takes you through arid valleys (almost like a desert), rugged cliffs, sky caves and traditional villages to reach Lo Manthang Nepal.

It is moderate trek due to its high altitude and dry, rugged terrain. It requires a good level of fitness and acclimatization. The highest elevation reaches up to 4280 meters /14042 feet (Chogo la). Number of travelers increasing recent years because of road construction but still preserves its untouched charm.

Trek Cost and duration

Classic upper mustang trek is one of the expensive treks in Nepal due to its restricted area status. Total estimated cost begins from US$ 1750 to $2,500 per person for full board package. It takes 10 to 14 days of duration to complete the upper mustang hiking trip with 5 to 7 hours of daily walk. Exact duration depends on, itinerary, acclimatization stops, side trip and subject of interest etc. Any way the combination of natural beauty and cultural depth makes this journey an epic.

Permits and Fees

Upper Mustang Trek is not just a journey through a remote and forbidden kingdom; it is a passage through time, a glimpse into a world untouched by the rapid pace of modernization. Mustang opened for tourism since 1992. It requires special permit and ACAP permit to explore. Restricted area permits cost US$ 500 for first 10 days, then after US$ 50 each additional days and ACAP permit cost us$ 30 per person. Government of Nepal impose restrictions to preserve the cultural heritage, environment, to maintain security and its aura of mystique. Kagbeni check post register all details of trekkers and receive their permits before embarking on the journey.

Food and accommodation

Local tea houses / lodges along the route offer verity of local foods, some western dishes and clean room with basic facilities. We advise all to drink boiled/filtered/ bottled water and vegetarian food while trekking for safety. Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, Tibetan bread, Thukpa and Momo (dumplings) are common. Recently built hotel / resorts offers comfortable accommodation as well.

Transportation, guides and porters

Upper mustang is a part of Mustang district in Nepal situated north of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range of Himalayas and south to the border of Tibet / China. Flight, local bus and private car are the available options to go to visit upper mustang. But Pokhara to Jomsom flight is not recommended. Transportation cost depend on group size, mode of travel etc. We will arrange transportation as per your preferences and budget. Hiring a guide and porter is mandatory for the trek through reputed agency.
